I have a speech and need help choosing a good painting/work of art that has a lot of meaning...?
Ok - we have to present a 2 to 4 min speech on a work of art. Here are the rules though: We can't use abstract or surrealist art (some we can use) but most we can't because we can interpret them any way. Ex: a bunch of lines can be abstract and i can make it be anything i want it to be. So can you give me some good paintings with a lot meaning but somewhat realistic?
"Arnolfini Wedding", by Jan van Eyck. It has a simple meaning (it's a statement or contract of marriage), but it is full of iconography support this conclusion. By leading someone through this piece it would be simple to bring them to this conclusion as well. I think that giving a speech on this piece would be effective because the message is easy to deliver and the symbols are easy to see and therefore connect and deliver to your audience.
It is also a sensational piece. It is in every art history textbook and is an iconic piece of northern art. For a portrait it is rather the small and the detail is amazing.
