How do I work on a marine engine?

I am purchasing my first boat, and i need some basic knowlage on how to maintain it

Maintaining the boat is a relatively easy proceadure.
A boat engine is very similar to a car engine, the main difference is that boat engines tend to only have two gears, forwards and reverse.
Now I wouldnt recommend actually dismantling the engine yourself unless you are qualified as you could damage the engine and it would cost quite a bit for repairs.

The simplest way to maintain your boat is to simply, ensure that before and after using it you run the engine through with FRESH water and that you wash the entire boat down with fresh water. Make sure all the electrical components are kept well away from water and also, ensure that you stick to any fuel/oil ratio requirements that the engine may have. Follow those and your engine will run alright and just have it checked over by a competent person regularly (i.e. every set number of running hours).
